WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO FILM?

For me I started using film as a sort of experimentation. I’ve always been into photography and stills but I wanted to see what actual movement in my images could look like, and it turned out rather well.

WHAT INFLUENCES THE FILMS YOU CREATE? WHERE DO YOU DRAW

INFORMATION FROM?

To be honest I’ve no real source or fountain of inspiration, it comes in bursts and I try to capture it. I write everything down, whether it be in my phone or notebook, inspiration is a bit sparing for me so I need all I can get!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITES TYPES OF FILM TO WATCH/CREATE?

I really enjoy films that consider the context of which they wish to be viewed. Like Wes Anderson films have a sense of place that is just as important as the story that takes place within them. Films should be balanced and should be created in a moment with all things in that moment considered; from the colour of the sky to the characters shoes, all of this is picked up by the audience and each person picks up a different part, which is the magic of film. discovering things that you didn’t notice before.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS MORE IMPORTANT; STORY TELLING OR AESTHETICS?

I think they’re both as important as the other. Balancing both the concept and design is important to all films and filmmakers, even if they favour one of the other. I find that having a balance creates a better outcome as both areas of the film not only work together but complement each other; the outcome is then greater.

WHAT PART OF FILM MAKING DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?

I think it shooting the film – not yet edited but in your mind you can see the shots come together and its such a nice feeling. The work slowly falls into place like a little puzzle.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM?

Its always changing; there are so many great films out. But right now it would have to be “Loving Vincent”. For me it has the perfect mix of artistry and story, even the context of its creation is amazing!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG FILM MAKERS LIKE YOURSELF?

Try and try again. Keep experimenting, keep making. Film is a medium and an artform and not a natural thing for most people. if you film everyday, create everyday, even just document you life and those around you, film making will become a necessity in your life, which is a pretty great need to have,
