JOHN WATERS
The King of camp from Baltimore, John waters has created a cult fame for himself since the early 60’s with his horrifically offensive yet remarkably eye-catching films.
Some of his slightly more censored concoctions, like the 1988 original ‘Hairspray’ really took off, while his more niche delights, the 1969 Mondo Trasho, for example, have stayed fresh in the minds of his die-hard fans for decades (with a film focused on the life of a hit and run driver, it’s kind of hard to forget).
Giving a name to some previously unknown stars who’d go on to be some of the most iconic queer performers in film history (see - Divine, the drag queen who inspired Ursula in the little mermaid) while also working with big names like Johnny Depp and Matthew Lillard, Water’s crossed boundaries almost constantly, to produce some of the most deplorably beautiful films of all time.
